Middle School

Term 2 Week 3

Parent Teacher Interviews
The Middle School Parent Teachers Interviews were conducted in the CEC over 3 nights during Weeks 1 and 2. It was pleasing to see parents and students in attendance, with the majority of the conversations being productive and positive in nature. We thank parents for providing their time for these interviews and hope you found them useful in understanding your son/daughter’s progress. We encourage parents to maintain an active involvement in the College and welcome ongoing and continuous dialogue. Therefore, please touch base with your child’s teachers throughout the course of the term should you have any concerns.

Assessment Calendars
These can be accessed through the Middle School page on Canvas. Please ensure your children have a copy displayed in a common space in the home and are actively engaged in preparing for their assessment.

Middle School Extension Process
Throughout the course of the year, students may require additional support and flexibility to complete their assessment. The grounds for requesting an extension usually include either a period of illness or personal reasons, with a least three days’ notice before the due date (where appropriate). Technological or computer problems are not usually accepted grounds for extensions and students are encouraged to continually update their work on different devices. Students who need to apply for an extension should present to their classroom teacher and relevant Curriculum Coordinator in the first instance before discussing with the Coordinator of Middle School, Ms Fiona Dixon. A student requesting an extension should have a medical certificate or other relevant documentation.  Where appropriate the College will look to support students in the best way we can and we encourage students to discuss their concerns with their classroom teacher, Curriculum Coordinator and/or the Coordinator of Middle School.

Middle School Mathematics – Curriculum focus
There are a range of units being studied this term including measurement of 3D shapes in Year 7, solving equations in Year 8 and congruent and similar triangles in Year 9.

Students have received their Term 1 report cards and know their areas of strength and areas for improvement.

Years 5, 7 and 9 are gearing up for NAPLAN in Week 4, providing students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning over the last two years. We wish all students the best of luck with this testing.

Tutorials continue to run for all students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in K02 from 3:30-4:30pm.

Mr Chris Pollock
Curriculum Coordinator – Mathematics (Years 7 – 9)

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will undertake the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Test on Tuesday 14, Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May. NAPLAN examines the important skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life; such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. NAPLAN tests are not pass / fail tests. The results are one of a number of sources of information for parents and teachers regarding student progress at a point in time. These tests are nation-wide and are developed and managed by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority.

The following structure will be followed in Middle School (Years 7 and 9) for the administration of the NAPLAN tests:
- Tuesday 14 May:  Language Conventions (45 minutes) and Writing (40 minutes)
- Wednesday 15 May:  Reading (65 minutes)
- Thursday 16 May:  Numeracy (Part A: calculator - 50 minutes. Part B: no calculator - 10 minutes).

The tests will be undertaken as a large group in the CEC for Year 7 and 9. The following equipment will be needed by the students to undertake the NAPLAN test:
- 2B or HB pencil
- blue or black pen
- an eraser
- a sharpener
- a calculator.

Regular lessons will follow NAPLAN testing. Please have students bring necessary equipment for these lessons on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Friday 17 May is the designated catch-up day for students who have missed one or more of the tests. Please contact Ms Fiona Dixon if your son/daughter misses a NAPLAN session.
If you would like to discuss your child sitting the NAPLAN tests, please contact me ASAP.

Please find below the planned tutorial roster for those students requiring assistance with their academic studies. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity for additional support.
